Board to Extend School Dismissal Period

The Whittier Union High School District Board of Trustees will convene early next week to vote on extending the school dismissal period beyond the initial return date of April 6.

The discussion follows a “Safer at Home” order issued through April 19 by Los Angeles County officials and a similar “Stay at Home” order issued by the state to minimize the exposure and spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus).

The District is taking an incremental approach to re-opening schools based on recommendations by county and public health officials. An updated, tentative return date will be announced on the District’s website following the telephonic meeting.

To protect the health and well-being of students and staff, only core essential employees will be required to report to work. All other employees will continue to work from home and remain on call. Staff emails are available on the District website.

Instruction and the District’s daily nutrition program will resume after Spring Break on Monday, March 30.

“Although this is a difficult and challenging time, we are committed to ensuring our students and families are safe and healthy while continuing to provide for our students’ education,” Superintendent Martin Plourde said. “We wish all our families and staff well and look forward to continuing operating a high-quality distance learning program when we return from Spring Break.”
