Attendance Procedures:

The attendance procedures are intended to emphasize the importance of good attendance and responsibility. California law requires everyone between the ages of 6 and 18 to attend school unless they have graduated from high school or passed the California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE) - Education Code 48200. Parents and students are responsible by law for consistent attendance. Parents should notify the Attendance Office prior to all absences, if at all possible email [email protected] or call (562) 698-8121 ext. 4040/4041/4042.  Studies have shown that students who attend school regularly are successful. Our goal is to do everything possible to assist our students to do well.

Good Attendance and good grades go hand in hand. The attendance procedures are intended to emphasize the importance of good attendance and responsibility. The expectation is that each student attends each class regularly, arriving on time.

Each student is assigned an I.D. number. Knowing the I.D. number is helpful in expediting all inquiries and resolutions.

ABSENCES:

When returning to school from an absence, there are 3 ways to justify an absence:

  1. An email can be sent to the Attendance Office at: [email protected]

Whether a medical or parental note please include the I.D.# if possible.

  1. Note(s) can also be turned into the Attendance Office.
  2. Parent/Guardian can call the Attendance Office

     (562) 698-8121 extensions: 4040, 4041 or 4042.

*We experience a high volume of calls, so if your call is not answered, PLEASE leave a message. We are continually checking our voicemail.

Please make sure that the student's I.D.Number and full LEGAL name are on each correspondence sent in.

We ask that whenever possible all absences be cleared within 3 school days. A truancy or unexcused code will be noted otherwise and Saturday School or detention may be assigned. At the end of each school month, absences are automatically changed from uncleared (A)  to truant (Y) or unexcused (X). Students with 10 or more absences are considered to be chronically absent. Subsequent absences will require a medical note for clearance. Of course chronic medical issues will be considered on a case by case basis.

Chronic medical issues can be shared confidentially with Attendance Office personnel and or counselor for understanding.

Extended Leave

Extended non-medical absences (family emergency, vacations, or any other personal reason) should be excused prior to leaving.

There is an Extended Leave Form in the Attendance Office. The Extended Leave form should be completed to excuse the absences. Any leave from school longer than 3 days are subject to making up absences by attending Saturday School.

VERIFIED LEGAL ABSENCES:

  • Illness absence with a doctor’s note or authorization by an authorized school official.
  • Exclusion from school, documented by a medical professional.
  • Medical appointments, verified by a medical professional.
  • Funeral of an immediate family member of the student (2 days in-state, 3 days out-of-state).
  • Written verification of a personal reason, such as:
    • Court appearance
    • Observance or attendance of religious holiday, ceremony or retreat.
    • Attendance at an educational conference
    • Attendance at an employment conference
    • Government agency appointments
    • Attendance at a political or civic event

All absences should be cleared in a timely manner.

Make-up work and tests may be withheld from a student until absences have been excused through the Attendance Office.

Saturday School:

A Saturday School Program for absences, truancies, and tardies has been implemented. In accordance with the school attendance policy, students will receive a truancy after returning from absences that have not been excused by a parent/guardian. Students receiving a period truancy or all day truancies may be assigned Saturday School, which is held from 8:00am-12:00pm (a schedule can be found in the Attendance Office). Failure to attend an assigned Saturday School will result in reassignment of the first available date. Failure to attend a second time assignment may result in detention, In-House, or Suspension for defiance. Students must wear their I.D. badges and bring academic assignments to work on independently and quietly. Failure to abide by the rules during Saturday School will result in student being asked to leave with no credit for time served and an additional Saturday School date will be assigned. If further discipline is required, the Dean of Students will follow the school wide discipline policy once school is in regular session.

OFF CAMPUS PASSES:

Off Campus permits are issued for medical appointments or personal matters that cannot be handled outside of school hours. Parent/Guardian must contact the Attendance Office prior to the student leaving. Absences not cleared through the Attendance Office prior to leaving will be considered truant or unexcused.

SCHOOL ACTIVITY PARTICIPATION:

In order to improve school attendance for all students and stress the importance of good attendance the following guidelines will be followed:

Students requesting to participate in school activities must be cleared by attendance. The students’ attendance will be reviewed for all absences: all day and period unexcused absences, excessive excused absences, excessive tardies. Saturday School assignments must be served before activity tickets can be purchased.

  • Clearance is not necessary for five (5) excused absences per semester, 10 total for the year. All unverified absences must be cleared and or Saturday School attendance must have been served. Attendance must be verified before clearance will be given.
  • Students have the opportunity to make up any absence by attending Saturday School.
  • Attendance to one Saturday School session clears one full day absence.
  • Activities are school sponsored, and as such, the school has the right to deny participation for any reason deemed appropriate.
  • Catastrophic circumstances or extreme medical cases will be considered on a case by case basis.
Delivering item(s) to students:

Flowers, balloons and/or gifts will NOT be accepted or delivered to students.

Items left for student pick up is NOT the responsibility of school personnel.

Money or electronics will not be accepted, instead the parent/guardian must wait for the student to be summonsed out of class so that they might deliver it themselves.

** SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION HAVE THE RIGHT TO DENY PARTICIPATION
