Course Descriptions

Course of Study Development & Approval

  1. A teacher or group of teachers write a new course of study either to address a local site need or as part of a district curriculum writing team.
  2. The course of study is forwarded to the Director, Curriculum & Instructional Materials for review. The course of study is aligned to the district format, edited, and any obvious lack of clarity addressed.
  3. The Director forwards the course of study to the appropriate Curriculum Improvement Team (CIT) for review. A CIT consists of the department chairs in that subject area (English, math, science, etc.) that meet monthly to discuss curriculum, instruction, student performance, and instructional materials. The teacher(s) who wrote the course of study are invited to attend the CIT meeting in order to explain their course of study and to answer any questions.
  4. If the CIT recommends revisions to the course of study, the teacher(s) continue to work on the document and resubmit it to the CIT.
  5. If the CIT recommends the course of study for approval, it is forwarded to the District Curriculum Council (DCC) for review. The DCC consists of the following members:

    Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services
    Director, Curriculum & Instructional Materials
    Assistant Principals, Curriculumall sites
    Assistant Principal, Guidanceone representative
    Principalone representative
    WSEA (Teachers Association) Curriculum Committee Chair
  6. If the DCC recommends the course of study for approval, it is forwarded to Superintendents Council that consists of the following members:

    Superintendent
    Assistant Superintendents
    Director, Student Support Services
    Director, Curriculum & Instructional Materials
    Director, State & Federal Categorical Projects
    Director, Assessment & Professional Development
    Principals
  7. If Superintendents Council recommends the course of study for approval, it is forwarded to the Board of Trustees for final approval.
  8. A course of study is presented to the Board of Trustees two consecutive meetings for final approval.
